Weather was great today.
Sunny and in the high 60's. We started the day by visiting Kennebunkport and some of the neighboring towns.
The coast along Kennebunkport differs from the rest of the Maine coast due to its composition. The town seems to have a lot of money, since there are a lot of very big houses in the town. Kennebunkport is also the summer home of former U.S. President George Herbert Walker Bush. First built by Bush's maternal grandfather George Herbert Walker, it has been a family home ever since, and has been owned by Bush since shortly the early 1980's.
In the afternoon we drove to Freeport Maine. In 1912, Leon Leonwood Bean opened a store in the basement of his brother's apparel shop at Freeport Corner, selling the "Bean Boot" (or Maine Hunting Shoe). This store, L. L. Bean, became so popular that in 1951 it started remaining open 24 hours a day. To this day it remains open 24 hours a day. It is now a worldwide company with annual sales of over a billion dollars. We not only spent time roaming through the L.L. Bean store, but also visited many other outlet stores that have opened in Freeport.
For dinner, RoxAnne and I both had a lobster roll from a local shop, then we came back to the campground and started a campfire. Several of our neighbors came over and we ended up talking around the fire for several hours. It was a great day. Tomorrow we leave this campground and head north.
