Plymouth

Today we drove to the town of Plymouth. The Pilgrims from the Mayflower officially disembarked on December 21, 1620 and it is traditionally said that they first set foot in America at the site of Plymouth Rock.  We learned a lot of history during our visit. Then we traveled a short distance away to Carver, Massachusetts.  It is known for its cranberry bogs.  By the 1940s the cranberry harvest was the largest in the world, and today it is still a major business in town.  We took a tour at the Flax Pond cranberry farm. Flax Pond Cranberry Co., is a family owned farm consisting of 34 acres of producing cranberry bogs. The cranberry bogs have been in production since the early 1890"s and today produce 150 to 200 barrels per acre (in a good year) of fresh fruit for Ocean Spray Cranberries.

The National Monument to the Forefathers. It is the world's largest solid granite monument, and is the fourth-tallest statue in the United States. The cornerstone was laid August 2, 1859 and the monument was completed in October 1888

  1. Were you disappointed in the rock? We thought it was going to be some big thing.

    1. It was pretty small. They said it was estimated that the original Rock weighed 20,000 lbs. In the beginning, souvenir hunters chipped it down. There are also pieces in Pilgrim Hall Museum, as well as in the Smithsonian.
